CPI(M) leader accuses Kerala government of disunity and failures

M.V. Jayarajan criticised hospital services, school sports arrangements and police conduct, making allegations against the UDF administration.

Communist Party of India (Marxist) State committee member M.V. Jayarajan has accused Kerala’s United Democratic Front (UDF) government of disunity and failing to address everyday public needs. He said infighting within the Congress, which traditionally surfaced towards the end of UDF administrations, had begun at the start of the current term. Jayarajan agreed with UDF leader Adoor Prakash, who had said the alliance was not functioning as a team.

Jayarajan cited power cuts, vacant doctor posts and shortages of medicines in hospitals. He also criticised the organisation of school games in Thrissur. He alleged that police, fire and rescue personnel, ambulances and medical teams were not adequately arranged. He said injured children had no one to take them to hospital and criticised the Education Minister for seeking an official report only two days later. He also questioned the response of district administrators and the city corporation.

Separately, he accused police of excessive force during a clash at a university hostel in Thiruvananthapuram. He alleged officers broke open the hostel gate and assaulted students. Jayarajan said firecrackers or incendiary objects and soda bottles were thrown at the hostel at around 7.45 p.m., followed later by bricks and stones, while police failed to intervene. The Hindu reported these as allegations made by the politician.

Jayarajan also criticised police action during a Delhi protest over an examination paper leak and accused the UDF of contradictory political alliances. He alleged that the front was cooperating with Jamaat-e-Islami while also maintaining a political understanding with the Bharatiya Janata Party.
