The new procedure outlines permitted corrections, supporting documents and cases that may require publication in India’s official gazette.
India’s Unique Identification Authority (UIDAI) has issued a standard operating procedure for name changes on Aadhaar. It sets out permitted cases, supporting documents and the application process. Times of India and India Today have also reported on the procedure.
The rules cover spelling corrections and discrepancies, including regional-language versions. Separate provisions apply to minors, including changing a child’s record from “Baby of…” to an actual name. Surname changes after marriage or divorce require an affidavit and proof of identity. Gender-transition requests require applicable identity documents.
The procedure also covers removing titles, prefixes, dots and special characters, and removing an alias marked urf. Names must generally appear in capital letters. Minor corrections are accepted when they match identity or relationship documents already submitted to UIDAI. A substantial change may require a Gazette of India notification, alongside identity documents. UIDAI says it will verify the notification and compare the proposed name with names previously recorded for the holder.
Applicants generally need to visit an Aadhaar centre in person, submit the form and prescribed documents, and complete biometric authentication. Routine name updates are generally limited to two. Further requests may be considered through a separate exception process. India Post lists a standalone demographic update fee of 75 rupees. Applicants receive a URN to track the request.
