Volkswagen has confirmed a precautionary recall covering more than three million vehicles worldwide after German authorities identified a potential steering risk linked to corrosion and a bolt that could fracture.

Germany’s motor transport authority, the KBA, said corrosion could cause a bolt to break and lead to steering failure. The authority’s statements list Volkswagen Tiguan, Touran, Golf and Caddy models built between 2013 and 2024, as well as about 700,000 Audi vehicles from 2017 to 2024. Handelsblatt later reported that Seat and Skoda models were also affected.

A Volkswagen spokesperson told AFP the corrosion issue was found during quality-control checks. The company said it was recalling affected vehicles as a precaution and reported no injuries. The spokesperson said drivers could continue using their cars until they arrange a dealer appointment for bolt replacement.

Seat said it was recalling 224,000 Ateca and Tarraco models built between 2016 and 2026 worldwide because of the same issue. The available report does not provide a single final total across all brands or a complete model-by-model list for Seat and Skoda.

Owners can use the vehicle identification number and their national Volkswagen, Audi, Seat or Skoda recall service to check whether a specific car is included and arrange the prescribed inspection or repair. The exact instructions may differ by model and market.
