Former Russia coach Ilya Vorobyov said Alexander Ovechkin could play one game for Moscow’s Dynamo after leaving the NHL, as a gesture of gratitude to the club where his career began.
“The most I think will happen is one game for Dynamo, to say thank you,” Vorobyov told TASS. He said such an appearance could provide a fitting end to Ovechkin’s career, while stressing that the decision would be the player’s own.
On October 5, 41-year-old Ovechkin said the current season would be his last in the NHL. He came through Dynamo Moscow’s system, won the Russian championship with the club in 2005 and returned to play for the team from September 2012 to January 2013 during the North American league lockout.
Dynamo general director Anatoly Kharchuk has previously said the club would welcome Ovechkin in any role. Vorobyov was offering his expectation, not announcing an agreement or a scheduled appearance.
