Wakefield end 58-year wait for a major trophy with Super League final win

Wakefield Trinity beat Warrington 23–10 at Old Trafford to become only the sixth club to win the Super League Grand Final.

Wakefield Trinity beat Warrington 23–10 at Old Trafford on October 3, ending a 58-year wait for a major trophy and becoming the sixth club to win the Super League Grand Final. The result capped a rapid rise for a side relegated in 2023 and returned to the top flight in 2024.

Jack Sinfield’s drop goal just before half-time helped swing the contest. His father, Kevin Sinfield, brought the trophy onto the field after completing seven ultramarathons in seven days. It was a particularly emotional occasion for the family as Jack played his first final at a ground where his father had celebrated major victories.

Wakefield’s squad combined young prospects with players the club recruited and developed. Props Caleb Hamlin-Uele and Caius Faatili, who had worked in factories before joining, helped make ground in the final. The club rebuilt its home ground during its spell outside the Super League and returned with backing from owner Matt Ellis.

Ellis said in March that he hoped to see Wakefield become champions within five years. The club achieved that goal far sooner. After the match, the team included a portrait of club photographer Dean Williams, who died a few months earlier, in its team photographs.
