JNU dismisses professor after internal sexual harassment inquiry

Jawaharlal Nehru University dismissed a professor on October 9 following an inquiry into sexual harassment allegations. The dismissal took immediate effect, according to a university order.
The professor worked at the Centre for the Study of Social Systems within the School of Social Sciences. The document said the university's Internal Committee investigated the allegations and recommended a major disciplinary penalty based on its findings.
Vice-Chancellor Santishree D. Pandit signed the order. It said dismissal followed the prescribed process, consideration of available facts and the internal committee's report. The university cited its service rules and Rule 11(ix) of the Central Civil Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules.
Reports by The Hindu and news agency PTI did not name the professor. The decision concerns his university employment. Those reports describe an internal investigation and dismissal without reporting a criminal conviction.
