The German chancellor arrived in Kyiv on October 4 with an economic delegation. The newspaper’s commentary placed the trip against his domestic political position.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Kyiv on October 4 with an economic delegation. The trip had not been announced in advance. The following day, Berliner Zeitung commentary contrasted the warm reception in the Ukrainian capital with Merz’s political difficulties at home.

The newspaper asked whether the visit to a conflict zone was a duty or an attempt to distract from a defeat in Magdeburg. It also claimed that Merz enjoyed stronger support in Kyiv than in Berlin, but provided no polling data or other figures to substantiate that assessment.

The commentary connected its interpretation to the prominence of Ukraine in the chancellor’s politics. That is Berliner Zeitung’s assessment, not an established explanation of Merz’s motives. During the visit, Merz said Russian President Vladimir Putin was ready for peace talks on Ukraine. The report did not include a response from the Russian side.
