Betawi cultural body plans work programme after first council meeting

LAKB says it will strengthen internal coordination and prepare a work meeting to set measurable priorities for preserving Betawi traditions in a changing Jakarta.

The Betawi Customary and Cultural Institution, known as LAKB, has begun a process of organisational consolidation aimed at preserving and developing Betawi culture in Jakarta. Its first meeting after the customary council’s inauguration focused on internal coordination and institutional strengthening, the ANTARA news agency reported.

Council chair Fauzi Bowo said the gathering was an early step toward building a more cohesive organisation. Participants discussed the institution’s internal structure and how to reinforce its role in sustaining Betawi customs and culture.

One central item was preparation for an LAKB work meeting. Bowo said that forum could produce a more directed programme with measurable targets and respond to the challenges of cultural preservation as Jakarta changes.

The meeting also considered issues affecting the Betawi community. Bowo said customary institutions have a role in maintaining values, traditions, history and identity while helping the culture remain active and adapt over time.

According to ANTARA, the session was chaired by Fauzi Bowo, identified as chair of LAKB’s customary council and Datuk Mualim Ahlul Adat. Deputy council chair Riano P Ahmad attended as well.

LAKB said stronger coordination among its organisational components should help members share a common direction and carry out the institution’s work more effectively. It aims to give Betawi customs and culture a stronger place in Jakarta’s development.

The report identifies the forthcoming work meeting as the next planning step but does not name specific projects, budgets or deadlines. The organisation’s immediate task is to prepare that forum and shape its programme.
