The IOC’s end-of-October deadline leaves time for additional expressions of interest; assessments are expected in March.
Seven countries have so far expressed interest in hosting the 2036 Summer Olympics, City A.M. reported. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has asked interested parties to come forward by the end of October, and the list could still grow. The countries named are Qatar, India, Germany, Hungary, Turkey, South Africa and the Republic of Korea. Chile, Egypt, Denmark, Indonesia and Canada could also join.
Qatar could build on venues developed for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, while India is due to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, which some observers see as a potential test of its organisational capacity. A South African Games would be the first Olympics held on the continent. Germany’s interest comes a century after Berlin staged the 1936 Games; Hungary and Turkey have also been mentioned among European prospects. The Republic of Korea hosted the 2018 Winter Olympics.
The IOC says its review will consider venue plans, funding, political support, delivery capacity and legacy. After the October deadline, interested parties are due to present to the future host commission. Assessments are expected in March, followed by strategic dialogue with preferred options. IOC President Kirsty Coventry said hosts bring distinctive character through their people, culture and approach to staging the Games. Britain has expressed interest in examining a possible bid for the 2040s.
