Edson Fachin and Davi Alcolumbre discussed judicial matters on Congress’s agenda, while CNN reported political concerns over the new Senate composition.
Brazilian Supreme Federal Court (STF) President Edson Fachin met Senate President Davi Alcolumbre at the Senate’s official residence on October 6. SBT News reported that the meeting ended at about 11 a.m. and addressed judicial matters on Congress’s agenda. CNN Brasil said Fachin had requested the meeting.
The meeting came two days after the first round of the 2026 elections. CNN reported that some STF justices were concerned about the new Senate composition. The estimate within the court was that about 50 senators openly support impeaching STF justices, with Alexandre de Moraes seen as the main target. Moraes has been a focus of criticism from supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro, whose 27-year-and-three-month prison sentence followed a case in which Moraes was the rapporteur.
CNN said at least 109 impeachment requests against STF justices had accumulated under Alcolumbre’s leadership. Some figures within the court believe the election weakened his political standing and could make it harder for him to win another term as Senate president early next year. CNN also reported concerns that right-wing lawmakers may seek to narrow the court’s criminal jurisdiction.
Fachin was also due to meet Senator Rogério Marinho, secretary-general of the Liberal Party and coordinator of Flávio Bolsonaro’s campaign. SBT News reported the planned meeting as part of a day of talks on judicial matters. CNN described it as an effort by the campaign to signal that it sought dialogue with the Judiciary.
