Tarcísio Motta, a federal deputy and leader of the PSOL–Rede federation in Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies, failed to win reelection in Rio de Janeiro state. With all ballots counted, he received 69,407 votes and became a substitute candidate for his federation.
Motta placed 39th in the overall vote for federal deputies in the state. Rio de Janeiro has 46 seats in the lower house, but mandates are distributed proportionally according to party and federation totals. PSOL–Rede won four seats, going to Rick Azevedo, Talíria Petrone, Glauber Braga and Pastor Henrique Vieira. Motta finished behind all four on the federation’s list.
In 2022, Motta received 159,928 votes and won his first term in the federal chamber. His current mandate runs through January 31, 2027. As a substitute, he could take a seat in the next legislature if one of the four elected federation deputies leaves office.
Motta is a history teacher and joined PSOL when it was founded in 2005. Before entering Congress, he served two terms on Rio de Janeiro’s city council from 2017 to 2023.
