Candidate named Hitler Mussolini elected mayor in Peru

Hitler Mussolini Simeon Flores won 34.54% of the vote in a small Peruvian town. Electoral data show that the three leading candidates were separated by 42 votes.
Hitler Mussolini Simeon Flores won the mayoral election in Queropalca, in Peru’s Huánuco region, according to the vote count. He ran for the centre-left party Ahora Nación. His candidate registration form lists him as the manager of Simeon Sac Investment Group.
Flores’s name drew international media attention, but the Politico.eu report concerns the municipal election result, not the candidate’s political views. The top three contenders in the race were separated by 42 votes. Peru’s electoral authority ONPE reported that Flores received 229 votes, or 34.54%.
Unusual names have appeared in Peruvian politics before. In 2018, Hitler Guesclin Alba Sánchez defeated Lenin Vladimir Rodríguez Valverde in a local election in the district of Yúngar. During the campaign, Alba said he was “the good Hitler.”
A similar case was reported in Namibia, where Adolf Hitler Uunona won a fifth term on a local council last year. He said he had considered his name normal as a child. Namibia was a German colony, and German-origin names are common there. Uunona said his father probably did not understand the historical meaning of the name Adolf Hitler.
