Man charged after alleged carjacking and crash near Sydney’s Queen Victoria Building

A 36-year-old Adelaide man has been charged after an alleged Mazda carjacking and a collision involving several vehicles in central Sydney, New South Wales police said.

Police said that about 9 p.m. on October 8, a man approached a parked Mazda at the intersection of King and Pitt streets before the car travelled along George Street. The Mazda then collided with a rideshare vehicle and a stationary police car near the Queen Victoria Building. A woman pedestrian suffered a cut to her head and was taken to hospital in stable condition. The rideshare driver and passenger were not injured.

Police arrested the driver at the scene. The Sydney Morning Herald identified him as 36-year-old Johnny Starri, who had travelled from Adelaide. The newspaper reported that he was charged with assault with intent to take a car, negligent driving, common assault and property damage. It also reported that he appeared in court from hospital on Friday and was refused bail until his next hearing.

State police confirmed that the man remained in hospital under guard and was undergoing mandatory testing. Investigators asked witnesses and people with dashcam footage to come forward. The inquiry is continuing.
