Ciro Gomes campaign says it will challenge Ceará governor election result

The defeated candidate’s campaign said it would file a legal complaint seeking to annul the vote. Gomes’s fraud allegations have not been substantiated; CNN Brasil was awaiting responses from Elmano de Freitas’s campaign and the TSE.

The campaign of Ciro Gomes (PSDB), who lost the Ceará governor’s race to Elmano de Freitas (PT), said it intends to file a court complaint seeking to annul the election. In a manifesto, Gomes thanked voters but accused his opponent and the party of taking the victory and alleged irregularities.

Official results published by Correio Braziliense show de Freitas with 2,875,573 votes and Gomes with 2,498,891, a margin of 376,682. Gomes alleged corruption, manipulation and illegal campaigning affected the outcome, but the available material does not provide independent evidence for those claims.

He also alleged that campaign advertising featuring President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was shown for his opponent in the final days despite election rules. CNN Brasil said it had requested comment from de Freitas’s campaign and Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court (TSE) and was awaiting responses at publication time. The stated intention to file a complaint does not mean a court has found violations or annulled the election.
