Harish Rao accuses Telangana government of breaking promises to minorities

The BRS leader says the state is spending about ₹1,300 crore against a promised ₹4,000 crore, while overseas scholarship funding has fallen sharply.

T. Harish Rao, a former Telangana minister and senior Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader, accused the Congress-led state government of failing to fulfil commitments to religious minorities. He said those promises included allocating ₹4,000 crore for minority development and welfare.

Speaking at a programme organised by the Telangana Turaka Kasha Welfare Association in Gajwel on 4 October, Rao criticised the government over commitments to minorities, farmers and poor people. He said the minority budget had been about ₹300 crore before K. Chandrashekar Rao became Chief Minister and rose to ₹1,800 crore under the BRS government.

Rao said Congress had promised to raise the allocation to ₹4,000 crore but the current government was spending only about ₹1,300 crore. He also alleged that minority communities were not receiving proper support from the Minority Finance Corporation.

Rao said the BRS government had provided overseas scholarships to minority students on the same basis as students from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Backward Classes. He put the BRS-era scholarship allocation at about ₹1,550 crore, compared with ₹14 crore provided by the Congress government over the past three years.

These figures and accusations were presented by Rao as he criticised the government’s record. The Hindu report did not include a response from the state government.
