Physician Jorge Tartaglione recommends seven to eight hours of sleep a night and highlights sleeping position and bedroom conditions. He outlined the advice in an interview with La Nación.
Tartaglione advises against sleeping on the stomach, saying it can cause significant lower-back pain. He favors the side, especially the left. He says side sleeping may reduce snoring because lying on the back can cause the tongue to fall backward and impede airflow. In his explanation, lying on the left may also help limit reflux.
His sleep-hygiene suggestions include a calm, dark and cool bedroom. He recommends removing televisions and phones, keeping the room tidy, closing closet doors and avoiding plants that may be distracting. The pillow should rest against the shoulder and support the head.
These are the physician’s recommendations as reported in the interview, not universal medical instructions. Persistent sleep problems, pain or pronounced snoring warrant individual medical advice.
