The Gemelli's strongest result came in obstetrics and gynecology, which confirmed third place globally and first in Italy, according to a statement from the foundation. The Rome-based hospital also took first place nationally in gastroenterology, endocrinology and pneumology, a set of results the foundation described as top-level.
In oncology, the Gemelli rose to second place in Italy and 29th in the world among 300 centers examined globally. The foundation said the result confirms the growing national and international relevance of its Comprehensive Cancer Center and reflects the daily work of an entire professional community. It added that a complex care system has assisted nearly 65,000 patients from across the country, more than 22 percent of whom came from outside their home region.
Gastroenterology was another standout, ranking first in Italy and 11th in the world. Neurology and nephrology placed second in Italy, while cardiology was third nationally and 27th globally. Orthopedics took third place in Italy and 70th in the world, and neurosurgery was third in Italy and 75th worldwide. The foundation also reported notable results in cardiac surgery, pediatrics and urology.
The ranking compiled by Newsweek and Statista rests on three components. An international survey of doctors gathered more than 42,000 recommendations between May and June 2026 and accounts for 83.5 percent of the overall score. An accreditation score, based on national and international quality and specialty certifications, contributes 10 percent. A third component measuring the implementation of Proms, the tools that gauge outcomes as perceived by patients, was introduced by Statista in collaboration with the International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement and weighs 6.5 percent this year.
In pediatrics, the Bambino Gesù hospital advanced two positions from the previous edition to fourth in the world, confirming its place as the leading hospital in Europe. For the pediatrics section, Newsweek and Statista evaluated about 800 facilities in 35 countries and included 250 hospitals in the final ranking. The Bambino Gesù has been in the Top 10 since 2024 and is the only Italian facility among the top 25 worldwide in the specialty. The top three places went to the North American hospitals Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Boston Children's Hospital and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
The pediatric hospital also received recognition for two standout specialties, oncology and neonatology, identified as areas of particular excellence within pediatrics.
Tiziano Onesti, president of the Bambino Gesù Pediatric Hospital, said the recognition belongs to all those who care for children every day with competence and dedication and who contribute to the life of the hospital. He said that knowing the hospital's excellence is recognized by the international health community is an important confirmation of the value of its people and their daily work, supported constantly by a very broad community. Onesti said his thoughts go to the Holy See, which guides the hospital's mission, to the National Health Service of which the hospital is an integral part, and to institutions, associations, benefactors and various partners. He added that families entrust their children to the hospital in the most difficult moments, a trust that must be answered by combining quality of care, research and attention to the person.
