The decision, announced by the Prime Minister’s Department’s legal affairs division, follows a meeting of the Federal Territories Pardons Board, which includes Attorney‑General Dusuki Mokhtar, Federal Territories Minister Hannah Yeoh and three members appointed by the king.
Under the terms of the pardon, Najib – 73 – must remain under house arrest until 23 August 2028 and pay the full RM50 million fine that was reduced from the original RM210 million imposed when his sentence was halved in February 2024.
Najib has been serving a six‑year term at Kajang prison since August 2022 after the Federal Court dismissed his final appeal in the SRC International case, a subsidiary of the 1MDB scandal that saw him convicted of abuse of power and money laundering involving more than RM2 billion.
Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders, meeting in Petaling Jaya, reiterated their commitment to anti‑corruption efforts, stating that no one is above the law and that convicted individuals must serve their sentences in accordance with the Federal Constitution.
Barisan Nasional (BN) welcomed the board’s decision, with secretary‑general Zambry Abdul Kadir expressing gratitude to the Yang di‑Pertuan Agong and emphasizing respect for constitutional monarchy, parliamentary democracy and the rule of law.
The conditional pardon does not affect Najib’s separate 15‑year conviction handed down in December 2025 for a 1MDB‑related abuse of power and money‑laundering case, which carries a RM11.38 billion fine; he is currently appealing that judgment.
