Speaking at a press conference in Jakarta, Zahid said the pardon – approved by Yang di‑Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim after the 64th meeting of the Federal Territories Pardons Board – could provide a positive lift for UMNO in the current political landscape.
Najib Razak was granted a conditional pardon that allows him to serve the remainder of his prison term for the SRC International case under house arrest until 23 August 2028, provided he pays a RM50 million fine.
Zahid expressed hope that the development would "add value" to UMNO, adding the phrase "insya‑Allah" to signal confidence that the move will resonate with voters amid what he described as a "blue wave" sweeping the country.
He also outlined UMNO’s strategy for the Melaka election, saying Barisan Nasional chairman Ab Rauf Yusoh has been given a mandate to hold talks with any political coalition and to compile a list of candidates based on feedback from various quarters.
According to Zahid, the party will aim to retain assemblymen who have performed well and will prioritize "winnable, acceptable and likeable" candidates to capitalize on the perceived momentum.
