The ministry, citing reports from Anadolu, confirmed that the blast occurred on Friday at a military site in the Ayyash region, a locality situated to the west of the strategic Deir ez‑Zor province in northern Syria.
According to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), the soldiers who perished were part of a procession that had set out from the National Hospital in Deir ez‑Zor city, indicating they were likely being moved for medical or logistical reasons.
The authorities have not disclosed the cause or the exact circumstances of the explosion. The ministry’s Media and Communications Department said investigators are assessing the incident and its consequences, but no official casualty figure was provided at the time of the initial report.
State‑run Alikhbariah TV added that ambulances and civil‑defence teams were dispatched to the scene, and that the nature of the blast remained unclear pending further investigation.
Saturday’s statement marked the first official casualty toll released since the explosion was first reported, confirming the death of 11 soldiers.
