The Tianwen‑3 campaign will employ two Long March 5 rockets: one will deliver a lander and ascent vehicle to the Martian surface, while the second will place an orbiting return craft in Mars orbit. After the lander gathers samples with a scoop, a drill and a helicopter‑type drone, the material will be loaded into the ascent vehicle, launched into orbit and transferred to the orbiter for the Earth‑bound journey.
China’s space agenda over the past decade has focused on closing the technology gap with the United States. The country has achieved notable milestones in rocket reusability, built the Tiangong space station for a permanent crewed presence in low Earth orbit, and set a goal of landing a crew on the Moon by 2030.
The planned sample‑return effort follows the Tianwen‑2 mission, which is currently returning material from the near‑Earth asteroid Kamoʻoalewa and is expected to deliver its payload in 2027. Lessons from NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter are also expected to inform the design of Tianwen‑3’s aerial collector.
In contrast, NASA’s own Mars Sample Return program, originally slated to retrieve the titanium‑sealed tubes collected by the Perseverance rover since 2021, has been effectively cancelled. Although the U.S. Senate passed a spending bill on 15 January 2026 that restored many NASA budgets, the Mars sample‑return line item was omitted, signaling a shift toward crewed lunar and Martian missions.
U.S. officials have framed the decision as prioritising human exploration, noting that technologies developed for the sample‑return effort are still valuable for future crewed missions. The Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act explicitly states that the existing Mars Sample Return program will not be funded, even as it acknowledges the program’s relevance to human exploration.
If Tianwen‑3 succeeds, China could claim the first-ever return of Martian material for detailed laboratory analysis, a scientific prize that has long eluded the United States. The achievement would also bolster Beijing’s standing in the emerging space‑race narrative, where both nations are racing to demonstrate capabilities that support long‑term human presence beyond Earth.
