The forecast, released on Monday, predicts a peak temperature of 25 °C for London on Tuesday, surpassing the 23 °C maximum expected in Greece’s capital, Athens, later in the week.
Meteorologists say six days of virtually uninterrupted sunshine are set to begin today, offering what could be a final burst of fine weather before the onset of autumn in the UK.
Temperatures are expected to hold at 23 °C on Monday and again on Wednesday, while Thursday and Friday should see highs between 21 °C and 22 °C. Saturday will cool slightly to 22 °C, but cloud cover is forecast to return.
The Met Office explained that a deep low‑pressure system forming west of the UK will draw warmer air from the continent and the subtropical Atlantic. As the low moves away, high pressure will build across the country, ushering in dry, bright conditions and more widespread sunshine.
Despite the warm spell, the service warned that the temperatures do not constitute a heatwave and that September‑long heat expectations have not materialised. Looking ahead, the agency’s long‑term outlook for October predicts more changeable and occasionally unsettled weather, with increased chances of rain and stronger Atlantic winds.
The forecast follows a record‑breaking dry summer that saw multiple heatwaves across London, underscoring the unusual warmth the city has experienced this year.
