The enforcement team entered Pratibha Jewels on September 16 after receiving credible inputs about possible misuse of the BIS Standard Mark. Officers seized about 430 grams of gold jewellery that did not bear the required HUID markings, a clear breach of hallmarking regulations.
The BIS statement said the absence of HUID markings violates provisions of the BIS Act, 2016, which mandates unique identification for all hallmarked gold items to assure authenticity and consumer safety.
Based on the findings, the bureau is launching legal proceedings against the shop’s owners under the Act, signalling a firm response to non‑compliance with hallmarking standards.
BIS officials explained that such search‑and‑seizure operations are part of a broader effort to protect consumer interests, curb deceptive trade practices and stop the circulation of substandard or counterfeit gold products.
Consumers have been urged to verify the authenticity of hallmarked jewellery through the BIS Care App and to report any suspicious or non‑compliant items to the agency.
The operation was overseen by Scientist‑E and Director P. Jayachandra Babu and involved Scientist‑C and Deputy Director Manish Raj, Scientist‑B and Assistant Director Piyush Kumar Gupta, along with other BIS personnel.
