Yashwanthrayagouda V. Patil, the elected representative for Indi taluk in Vijayapura district, handed in his resignation letter to Speaker G.S. Patil on September 22, citing the government's failure to officially declare his constituency as drought‑hit, which he said left farmers with crop losses and both people and livestock facing acute water shortages.
Patil explained that the lack of a drought declaration hampered relief measures, forcing him to confront growing frustration among voters who were struggling to secure water for irrigation and daily use, and he felt unable to fulfil the promises made during his campaign.
This is Patil’s second resignation attempt this year. In August, he stepped down after being denied a cabinet berth in the state ministry, only to withdraw the resignation after Congress leaders persuaded him to stay on, highlighting internal party tensions and his personal political calculations.
The resignation has placed the D.K. Shivakumar government under heightened scrutiny in the Legislative Assembly, as opposition parties and civil society groups are likely to question the administration’s response to the drought crisis and its broader handling of agrarian distress in the region.
