Raman’s talk, titled “From Curiosity to Discovery: The Power of Scientific Inquiry,” outlined how systematic observation, questioning, reasoning and evidence transform curiosity into scientific knowledge. He stressed that intellectual openness does not mean accepting every new idea uncritically, but requires objective evaluation and a willingness to revise understanding when data demand it.
He described scientific inquiry as an iterative process in which answers generate fresh questions and each discovery opens new avenues of investigation. According to Raman, curiosity and discovery remain fundamental drivers of progress, while logic and epistemic openness are essential for evaluating evidence and challenging assumptions.
Raman drew on his extensive research experience in agricultural ecology, forestry, ecological entomology, plant pathology, nematology and sustainable land management—fields in which he has earned international recognition, including Fulbright and DAAD awards.
SRM University‑AP Vice‑Chancellor Ch. Satish Kumar praised the lecture for refocusing attention on the fundamentals of research, noting that scholars can become overly fixated on publication metrics. He highlighted Raman’s contributions as an educator and mentor and his emphasis on nurturing student success.
Dean of Research Ranjit Thapa said the Distinguished Lecture Series provides students and researchers a rare opportunity to engage with eminent scholars and learn about the challenges and journeys behind distinguished academic careers. Registrar Vinayak Kalluri, UDL convener J.P. Raja Pandiyan, faculty members and students were also in attendance.
