Erode District Orders Source‑Segregated Waste Collection in Four Colour‑Coded Bins

The Erode district administration has mandated that households, commercial establishments and institutions separate municipal solid waste at the point of generation into four colour‑coded categories before handing it to authorised door‑to‑door collectors, in line with the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026.

District Collector S. Kandasamy announced the new protocol in an official release, specifying the four waste streams – wet, dry, sanitary and special‑care (domestic hazardous) – and the corresponding bins: green for wet waste, blue for dry waste, red for sanitary waste and black for special‑care waste.

The move targets a district of 22.51 lakh people, comprising 658,071 households, of which 338,355 are urban and 319,716 are rural, according to the 2011 Census.

Under the new schedule, wet, dry and sanitary waste will be collected daily, while special‑care waste, which includes expired medicines, paint containers, CFL bulbs, batteries and other hazardous items, will be picked up every Wednesday.

Kandasamy urged all waste generators to deliver only source‑segregated material on the designated days, warning that mixed waste will no longer be accepted for collection.

Officials say the segregation will enable separate collection, transportation and processing of each waste type, improving recycling rates and reducing the burden on landfill sites.
