A low‑pressure system moving across the west‑central and north‑west Bay of Bengal is projected to bring sustained heavy rain to large parts of Telangana over the next two days, prompting the IMD to issue its highest‑level warnings for the region.
For Wednesday, September 23, the IMD’s bulletin listed red alerts – indicating very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall – for isolated locations in Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalapally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Mahabubabad, Warangal and Hanumakonda districts. Orange alerts, signalling heavy to very heavy rain, were issued for isolated spots in Kumaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Jagtial, Rajanna Sircilla, Karimnagar, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Jangaon and Siddipet districts.
“Some districts in northern and northeastern Telangana could receive very heavy rainfall of 12 to 19 cm on Tuesday. The intensity of rainfall is expected to remain high over the following two days,” said G.N.R.S Srinivas, senior meteorologist at the IMD Centre in Hyderabad, noting that the system would dominate weather conditions across the state.
On Thursday, September 24, the IMD maintained red alerts for isolated places in Kumaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Karimnagar, Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalapally, Mahabubabad, Warangal and Hanumakonda districts, while orange alerts were extended to Adilabad, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Jagtial, Rajanna Sircilla, Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Jangaon and Siddipet districts.
Hyderabad and its surrounding suburbs are expected to see a generally cloudy sky for the next 48 hours, with moderate to heavy rain or thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds. Temperatures are forecast to hover around a maximum of 30 °C and a minimum of 22 °C.
The alerts are intended to prompt residents, local authorities and disaster‑management agencies to prepare for possible flooding and water‑logging, and to take precautionary measures as the heavy rains unfold.
