On September 23, 2026, Telangana irrigation ministers Jupally Krishna Rao and Vakiti Srihari announced that Karnataka had responded positively to their request for water releases to the Jurala Project, with chief minister D.K. Shivakumar assuring intermittent supply for the next ten days.
The ministers said they met Shivakumar on Tuesday and Wednesday, briefing him on the drought‑like conditions triggered by an El Niño event, falling water levels at Jurala, and the hardships faced by farmers in the ayacut areas of the erstwhile Mahabubnagar district.
The request originated from a letter dated September 20, sent by Telangana Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy on instructions from Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, seeking Karnataka’s assistance to alleviate the water shortage.
Following the meeting, Shivakumar immediately consulted Karnataka Water Resources Minister N. Cheluvarayaswamy and Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh, directing officials to take swift steps to facilitate the water release to Jurala.
Rao and Srihari thanked the Karnataka government for its cooperation and urged farmers and residents in the Jurala, Bhima, Nettempadu and Koilsagar ayacut areas not to panic, assuring that the state would manage irrigation and drinking‑water needs efficiently.
A joint meeting of ministers, MLAs and irrigation officials from the former Mahabubnagar district is scheduled for Thursday to discuss optimal utilisation of the water released to the four projects and to coordinate further relief measures.
