In a televised address earlier this month, Milei argued that the drilling venture violates a 1976 UN General Assembly resolution that urges both sides to resolve the sovereignty dispute through dialogue and to avoid unilateral decisions.
The Argentine leader is also slated to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday, underscoring the strong Israeli ties of the offshore project and reflecting Milei’s broader alignment with Israel and the United States, where President Donald Trump has hinted that Washington could reconsider its traditionally neutral stance on the Falklands.
Domestically, opposition lawmakers have accused Milei of exploiting the Malvinas issue to boost his popularity ahead of a 2027 re‑election bid, though a Buenos Aires‑based consultancy, Inteligencia Analítica, found only a modest uplift in his public image following the televised address.
Milei has introduced a bill to tighten sanctions on entities deemed to be unlawfully exploiting Argentina’s maritime spaces and continental shelf.
