Coach Eric Chelle confirmed the setback on Thursday, explaining that the striker’s injury was diagnosed as a muscle strain that will keep him sidelined for the upcoming fixture at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
In Osimhen’s place, Chelle has called up Coventry City forward Taiwo Awoniyi, who joins the squad on a short‑term basis. The 23‑year‑old will be expected to lead the line alongside other attacking options such as Tolu Arokodare, who has impressed on loan at Ajax with two goals in five league appearances.
The injury comes at a difficult time for the Super Eagles, who are still reeling from a disappointing run at AFCON 2025 and a failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. The loss of their most prolific active scorer adds pressure on Chelle to deliver a result against a motivated Madagascar side.
