According to a statement posted on its social‑media channels, the Mamata Trinamool Congress (TMC) claimed that BJP workers stormed a gathering of TMC leaders in the Mukundapur neighbourhood, injuring Humayun Kabir and manhandling a number of party activists.
The party released graphic photographs showing Kabir with visible injuries and blood on his clothes. It also said that Upasana Chowdhury, head of the TMC IT cell, was “molested” during the incident, her clothing torn, and that her car and home were vandalised by the alleged assailants.
TMC officials said the clash began after a dispute over the alleged capture of a party office, during which slogans were shouted, counter‑slogans exchanged and eggs were thrown. A delegation of TMC leaders was on its way to East Jadavpur police station to file a deputation when the attack occurred.
Prominent TMC figures, including general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, MPs Sagarika Ghose, Dola Sen and Derek O’Brien, and former MLA Samirul Islam, condemned the violence, urging that “political differences cannot become a licence for political violence” and calling for no impunity.
BJP MLA Sarbari Mukherjee, speaking to a local media outlet, defended the actions, saying that “they are protecting miscreants and people will now retaliate.” The West Bengal Congress also denounced the incident, describing it as a symptom of an attempt to impose one‑party rule in the state.
No official police statement has been released on the matter, and the investigation remains pending.
