Bhadravati Rural Police registered the case after Professor R. Thimmarayappa, Kuvempu University’s Registrar (Evaluation), filed a complaint. The case concerns a fifth-semester BSc student at the PES Institute of Advanced Management Studies in Shivamogga, who sat examinations in November and December 2025.
The university’s results, declared on April 4, 2026, showed the student had failed two papers. On June 22, the records were changed to show passing marks in both. A guest faculty member in the MBA Department raised the issue with the Registrar (Administration) on September 7. Then-registrar N. Hemanth asked the evaluation registrar to lodge a police complaint, which was filed on September 10.
The complaint alleges that Anusha, a temporary employee assigned to administer the Unified University and College Management System, changed the marks and accepted ₹10,000 from the student, Varshith N., to secure passing grades. Police have registered allegations including criminal breach of trust, cheating and forgery; the allegations have not been established in court.
According to Thimmarayappa, the evaluation registrar receives a one-day digital-signature credential each day and gives it to the system administrator to make authorised corrections to student records. He alleges that the credential was used to alter marks without his knowledge.
The university says the temporary employee has been removed and replaced by a permanent staff member. It is checking whether other students’ results were changed and is considering a broader inquiry. The police investigation is continuing.
