The cleanup was completed on Thursday, September 24, a day after The Hindu highlighted the problem. Airport sources said the waste included foundry sand, hotel refuse and non-biodegradable material. Access to the locations has since been blocked.
The affected plots are near Chinniyampalayam, between SST Mill Road and Chinniyampalayam–Irugur Road. Residents said dumping had taken place on land acquired by the district administration for the airport project and later handed over to the Airports Authority of India.
The AAI is working to build a boundary wall around the parcels acquired for the expansion, including the plots where the waste was found. The wall is intended to secure the airport land; the reported closure of access points is an immediate measure following the cleanup.
