The meeting took place on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. Russia’s Foreign Ministry said the talks focused on regional and international issues, particularly the situation around Iran, and described the conflict as one provoked by US and Israeli actions. That characterisation reflects Moscow’s position.
The meeting comes as Russia and Iran maintain a strategic partnership signed by President Vladimir Putin and President Masoud Pezeshkian in 2025. The agreement provides for closer ties and defence cooperation but contains no mutual-defence clause. Reuters reported that each country has provided the other with military expertise and equipment.
Pezeshkian thanked Putin earlier this month for Moscow’s position on the war. In an interview published Thursday, he said the United States would determine when the conflict ends, when asked whether it could be over by year’s end.
The public statement signals diplomatic coordination between Moscow and Tehran, but it does not set out a joint proposal, negotiation process or timetable for a settlement. The two governments’ call for diplomacy therefore remains a stated position rather than an announced peace initiative.
