Flávio Bolsonaro says he is ready to debate Lula before Brazil runoff

Brazilian senator and presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro said he is willing to debate Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva before the runoff. He wants to compare the candidates’ platforms and the current administration with that of his father.

Flávio Bolsonaro, the Liberal Party (PL) candidate, told reporters in Brasília that he intends to take part in debates with incumbent President Lula before the runoff. The senator said he had wanted to face Lula in debates during the first round as well.

Bolsonaro said he considers debates important because they would allow voters to compare the candidates’ platforms and Lula’s administration with that of his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro. He said he was confident he would perform well in such an exchange.

His statement signals a willingness to participate, but it does not confirm that a debate has been scheduled or that Lula has accepted. The Associated Press previously reported that both candidates skipped a planned televised debate before the first round.
