Late-2025 disasters affected educational institutions in Aceh, North Sumatra and West Sumatra, with some pupils attending classes in emergency tents.
Floods and landslides in late 2025 damaged homes, roads and schools in Indonesia’s Aceh, North Sumatra and West Sumatra provinces. ANTARA reported that 4,922 educational institutions were affected.
Damage varied: a flash flood swept away Sekumur public elementary school, the roof of SD Negeri 1 Babo collapsed and SD Negeri Alur Jambu was covered in mud. In West Aceh, about 50 pupils at SD Negeri Alue Lhok studied in an emergency tent.
Restoration work has allowed some schools to reopen. Khayla Syakira, a pupil at SMP Negeri 1 Mila in Pidie regency, said classrooms were much better after renovation. The school also has a prayer room where pupils can pray together at midday.
