Florida has begun issuing redesigned driver’s licenses and identification cards. The state’s Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) said the cards became available at service centres on September 30, with online orders through the MyDMV Portal expected in early November.
The front features Castillo de San Marcos, an orange, a manatee and a small alligator inside the Real ID star. The reverse shows the space shuttle Discovery. FLHSMV says the new credential includes added security features, including an image of the state seal. The agency has not said that counterfeiting is impossible.
The new cards will be issued when residents renew their documents or complete certain transactions that require a replacement. People with valid licenses do not need to replace them early; existing credentials remain valid until their expiration date.
Licenses can also carry designations for veterans, organ donors, people who are deaf or hard of hearing, and people with developmental disabilities, as well as lifetime permits for certain hunting, fishing, boating and sporting activities.
