A police officer suspected of firing the grenade that struck 14-year-old Eden in the face was placed in custody on October 5. The officer had been summoned to a police station for questioning, Franceinfo reported on Tuesday, citing a source close to the case and confirming an earlier report by RTL. The same source said he was due to be referred to judicial authorities on Tuesday afternoon.
Eden was injured on September 28 during a blockade at Château d’Épluches high school in Saint-Ouen-l’Aumône, in the Val-d’Oise department. His lawyer said the teenager suffered a serious head injury from a tear-gas grenade launcher. In an earlier statement, the lawyer said he had a double jaw fracture, all of his upper teeth were broken and four lower teeth were missing.
The Pontoise prosecutor’s office said on September 28 that two investigations had been opened. One, assigned to the police oversight body IGPN, concerns the officer’s shot. The second concerns alleged violence by the student against another female officer shortly before the shot.
The family’s lawyer, Elsa Marcel, said on Monday that a complaint would be filed, including over alleged attempted intentional homicide. She also said she wanted a judicial investigation opened and the officer placed in custody. The allegations and the parties’ accounts remain subject to investigation.
