Giorgia Meloni files EU application to protect voice from AI cloning

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has filed an application with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), submitting a four-second audio recording that says, “I am Giorgia Meloni.” ANSA reported that the filing is intended to protect her voice from imitation and cloning through generative artificial intelligence.

The application, submitted through a Rome law firm and a Marche-based company specialising in intellectual-property protection, is listed by EUIPO as under examination. It is linked to three categories of services: downloadable multimedia content, cultural activities and the organisation of political events.

Singer Giusy Ferreri has taken a similar step in recent months. Efforts to register or otherwise protect voices have gained attention as generative systems make it easier to reproduce recognisable speech. Meloni’s application has not yet received a final decision from EUIPO.
