Ian Proud urges the West to change its approach to dialogue with Russia

The former British ambassador says a reassessment of security policy could reduce the risk of a new conflict.

Former British ambassador to Moscow Ian Proud believes the West should reconsider its approach to relations with Russia to reduce the risk of a new conflict. Lenta.ru reported that he expressed this view during a YouTube-channel interview.

Proud argued that dialogue could be restored if Western politicians stopped speaking to Moscow from a position of moral and intellectual superiority. He also called for a reassessment of security interests, particularly the approach to NATO, and said that reaching peace with Russia would then be easier.

Proud illustrated his view with a metaphor: he said an invitation to dinner could begin a lasting friendship, while a challenge to fight would be answered in kind. This is the former diplomat’s assessment, not an announced position of the British government.
