PSSI president Erick Thohir congratulated the team on winning the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup and said it must prepare seriously for the 2030 World Cup. The federation’s nearer-term focus is the 2027 Asian Cup.
Erick Thohir, president of Indonesia’s football association PSSI, congratulated the national team on winning the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup and urged it to prepare for a larger target: the 2030 World Cup. He said coaches would review the team’s weaknesses ahead of the 2027 Asian Cup.
Indonesia beat Thailand 4-2 on penalties in Jakarta after a 2-2 draw through extra time. The hosts took the lead in the 84th minute when a Dean James free kick deflected off a Thai player. Thailand had already been reduced to 10 men after Nicholas Mickelson received a second yellow card.
Thailand equalized three minutes later through Iklas Sanron despite playing a man down. In extra time, Peeradol Chamratsamee put Thailand ahead in the 111th minute, but Elkan Baggott levelled four minutes later. Indonesia won the shootout after goalkeeper Emil Audero saved Nattapong Sayriya’s attempt.
Thohir said both the 9-2 win over Bangladesh and the final had been difficult tests. He said he would work with the coaching staff to identify weaknesses before the 2027 Asian Cup, adding that Indonesia would need serious preparation if it is to pursue a place at the 2030 World Cup.
