October 5 marks the 81st anniversary of Indonesia’s National Armed Forces, known as the TNI. The date also coincides with World Teachers’ Day and World Meningitis Day.
UNESCO’s 2026 World Teachers’ Day theme marks 60 years since the ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. The organization says this year’s focus is on supporting teachers and improving the standing of the profession. The day is observed annually on October 5.
Indonesia’s Ministry of Defense says the armed forces are marking their 81st anniversary this year. The ministry’s historical account links the date to the formation of the People’s Security Army, a predecessor of the TNI, on October 5, 1945.
World Meningitis Day is also observed on October 5. WHO says meningitis can be caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites. In bacterial meningitis, around one in six people die and one in five survivors develop severe complications. Vaccination offers the best protection against common bacterial forms.
