Karnataka chief minister travels to Delhi ahead of GST Council meeting

D.K. Shivakumar travelled to New Delhi ahead of the 57th GST Council meeting scheduled for October 8. The Hindu reported that the trip may also offer a chance to discuss state appointments with Congress leaders.

Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar left for New Delhi on Tuesday, where the 57th meeting of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council is scheduled for October 8. The Hindu reported that the visit could also give him an opportunity to meet senior members of the Indian National Congress.

Issues that sources told the newspaper might come up include appointments to the state Legislative Council, nominations to boards and corporations, and two vacancies in the Karnataka cabinet. A meeting has not been confirmed. Senior party leaders, including Lok Sabha opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, were occupied with protests against the Election Commission of India.

The trip is Shivakumar’s second to Delhi in a short period. He visited last week for a Congress Working Committee meeting, met Union ministers and raised Karnataka’s drought situation, development projects and irrigation schemes. He also submitted memoranda seeking the release of funds due to the state.
