Hyderabad water board says pipeline link saved 18 MGD during maintenance

An interconnection between three supply mains diverted about 80% of available water to a reservoir and cut a shutdown by more than 12 hours, officials said.

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board said an interconnection at the Nasarlapally pumping station helped save 18 million gallons per day of treated drinking water during maintenance of the Krishna supply network. The linkage was used during a recent shutdown of the Phase II main pipeline.

Of nearly 23 million gallons per day in the pipeline, about 18 MGD, or 80%, was redirected to the Phase III reservoir for public use. Around 5 MGD had to be released through scouring. Officials said the new arrangement shortened scouring from almost 20 hours to eight, reducing the shutdown by more than 12 hours.

The board estimated electricity savings at about ₹500,000. Crews also replaced 48 air valves on the main pipeline and restored supply soon after the work was completed. Officials said the 24-kilometre Nasarlapally–Godakondla stretch has several ageing or hard-to-access scouring arrangements.

The board is considering similar links at Godakondla, Kodandapur and other suitable pumping stations to reduce water losses during future maintenance. Those expansions remain under consideration.
