Los Angeles Unified recorded 6,131 student fights and 4,015 threats in the 2025–26 school year. The figures, reported by CBS Los Angeles from district data, were higher than four years earlier, while weapons-related incidents and reports of suicide risk declined over the same period.
CBS Los Angeles said LAUSD data showed fights up 21% from the 2022–23 school year. Student threats rose 11.5% to 4,015. The figures were presented to the school board in late September.
Experts interviewed by CBS differed in emphasis but called for continued safety work. The National School Safety Center’s executive director described the figures as very concerning and recommended stronger supervision, training and engagement with students, parents and teachers.
The district told the station that, compared with the previous school year, reports of fights, physical aggression, threats, weapons incidents and suicide risk had declined. LAUSD cited prevention programmes, restorative practices, staff training and partnerships with community organisations.
The district recorded 923 weapons-related incidents in the past school year, 38% below the level four years earlier. Reports of suicide risk totalled 10,055, down 14%. These are separate indicators, and the district’s statement also compared their year-on-year trends.
