The court overturned a two-year prison sentence over allegations that he received free opinion polls ahead of the 2022 election.
A South Korean appellate court on Wednesday acquitted former President Yoon Suk Yeol in a case involving free opinion polls ahead of the 2022 presidential election, Yonhap News Agency reported.
Yoon had previously been sentenced to two years in prison for violating the Political Funds Act. Special counsel Min Joong-ki’s team indicted him on allegations that he colluded with his wife and received 58 polls worth about 270 million won (US$202,000) for free.
Prosecutors said the polls were provided by self-proclaimed power broker Myung Tae-gyun between April 2021 and March 2022. The Yonhap report did not provide details of the appellate court’s reasoning.
