Germiston court postpones Matlala blue-lights case until November

Proceedings involving Julius Mkhwanazi, Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and Chris Steyn were adjourned until Nov. 6. The court made the decision Oct. 9.
Daily Sun and The Citizen reported the postponement, which allows additional time for disclosure and responses in the case. SABC had reported that morning that the accused were due back in the Germiston Magistrates’ Court.
The allegations concern private security vehicles linked to Matlala that were allegedly registered unlawfully in Ekurhuleni’s municipal fleet and fitted with blue lights and sirens.
Former Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department head Julius Mkhwanazi is also accused of receiving R70 000 from companies linked to Matlala. Chris Steyn is the municipal fleet manager. These are prosecution allegations, rather than findings of guilt.
An earlier postponement allowed the defence to study the docket and consult its clients. The next date for the proceedings is Nov. 6.
