Musk says SpaceX could outvalue the global economy

Elon Musk said he sees a path for SpaceX to reach a valuation several orders of magnitude greater than the current global economy, but did not explain how the company could achieve it.

The company’s founder made the remark in a post on X. The World Bank puts global gross domestic product at just over $118 trillion for 2025.

Comparing the value of one company with the annual output of the entire world combines two different economic measures. Musk offered no calculations to explain the projection and gave no timeline for reaching it.

The statement came on October 8, the same day U.S. President Donald Trump presented Musk with the National Medal of Science. The White House confirmed the ceremony and listed the SpaceX founder among the recipients.

The medal recognizes scientific achievement. The post did not provide a public valuation for SpaceX or the assumptions behind Musk’s statement.
