NDA wins 34 of 42 seats in Silchar’s first municipal corporation election

The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won 34 of 42 seats in the first election to the Silchar Municipal Corporation in Assam. The BJP took 32 seats and its ally, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), won two.

The Congress won two seats and independents six, according to The Hindu and the Press Trust of India. The results give the BJP-led alliance a majority in the new civic body. The Hindu’s source text says independents won eight seats, a figure that does not add up to the total; PTI and local outlet The Times of India report six.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma thanked Silchar residents and said the result reflected the importance they placed on development, peace, connectivity, empowerment and better governance. The city is an economic centre in southern Assam.

This was the first election to the Silchar Municipal Corporation. The city had previously been governed by a municipal board; it was upgraded to a corporation in September 2025, five years after the board was dissolved.
