Neurologist Conrado Estol says early education is linked to a lower risk of dementia in older age. In an interview with La Nación, he said healthy ageing depends on habits developed well before retirement.
Estol noted that life expectancy has doubled over the past century, while the quality of those added years remains a challenge. He identified seven pillars of healthy ageing: managing stress, maintaining social connections, sleeping well, avoiding tobacco, moderating alcohol, eating healthily and exercising.
He urged people to retain a sense of purpose, optimism and activity after 60. He said many successful businesses are started by people over 60 and cautioned against passivity after retirement.
For memory concerns, Estol recommends seeking professional advice early: healthy habits do not replace medical follow-up. He argues that metabolic and cardiovascular health should be addressed from youth, as ageing accelerates after 30.
